I love the idea of fairy tales being a kind of language, with elaborate symbol systems and depths of reference that can't be communicated clearly in any other way. Something like dreams, maybe.
I don't think it's necessary for this level of meaning to exclude other levels, though. I mean, historical prejudice--not only about gender, but also about class--are still there on another level.
